Sometimes, though, a full coverage foundation is exactly what is needed, such as when attempting to cover up that massive big pimple which erupted on our left cheek suddenly this morning. Then it’s a case of having to reach out for the ‘suit of armour’ covering.
I am perhaps not typical in my dislike of optimal coverage foundation (indeed, some of my readers have said they prefer a fuller coverage when I’ve reviewed a tinted moisturiser). But if you do share my antipathy, there are camouflage options available with a light feel to them.
Vichy Dermablend Fluid Corrective Foundation 16hr
One of them is this classic from Vichy, the Dermablend Fluid Corrective Foundation 16hr. It contains 30% ‘soft focus’ pigments to conceal imperfections while at the same time keeping things looking natural and feeling light.
Key ingredients/features:
- Glycerine and plant oil (moisturises)
- Thermal spa water
- SPF 35 sun protection
This is a really buildable formula, so as well as providing the optimal coverage when needed you can also spread it on thinly for days when you want to go light. When I’ve done this it still covers up some small areas of pigmentation that I have.
The formula is said to hold for 16hrs. I didn’t test it for that long, but it did stay put all day. There are six shades to choose from, accommodating a good range of skin colours, from Porcelain (light) to Espresso (dark). Shades swatched here are 25 Nude (above) and 35 Sand (below).
Dermablend Setting Powder
This setting powder is another best-seller and a companion product to the foundation. The idea behind it is to extend the hold of the foundation by a further two hours. Personally I love setting powders. I use them every day, not just because of the extended wear they give to your foundation but because they also add a better finish.
The powder adds a protective layer to the surface of the skin; so any water, sweat or smudge won’t spoil the look of your foundation. It certainly works and although it’s vivid white in colour (they all tend to be), used sparingly it’ll go on transparent, i.e it won’t alter the colour of your foundation.
I have used lighter setting powders, and for this reason I prefer to dab the Vichy powder on with a brush rather than the powder puff it comes with it (although you can, as Vichy suggests, apply the power generously with the puff, wait two minutes and then remove any surplus with a brush).
