July’s Fave Freebie – Clinique Chubby Stick (with review)

As someone a tad obsessed with skincare, I surprised myself this month by selecting a magazine with a makeup freebie on the front.

After much deliberation and endlessly thumbing my way through the magazine racks in my local Smiths  (even the staff were beginning to glance over at me, I’d been standing there that long!), I finally plumped for the Clinique Chubby Stick, Moisturising Lip Colour Balm, free with the August issue of Glamour.

I chose the Clinique, not because there was a dearth of skincare on offer this month, but because I’m a sucker for a pink lippie. Plus I don’t have that many chubbies in my stash, unlike skincare and gloss sticks of which I seem to have plenty, the latter generally acquired as gifts with purchase.

There are 2 lip colours to choose from, the pink hue of Woppin’ Watermelon  here,  or Super Strawberry’s smack of red. If lip colours are not your bag, then you may want to look out for copies of Glamour bundled with the Clinque  High Impact Mascara or the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion. Yes, all in all, Glamour is bundling 4 different Clinique products with its magazine this month.

Before starting the mini review I do want to quickly mention Elle, as it very nearly got my vote. The  magazine is giving away a Malin & Goetz skincare travel set this month with every issue. It’s pretty darn good. You get samples of its grapefruit cleanser, vitamin e face cream and lip moisturiser – all 3!

It was a tough decision but I think it was the warm pink of the Clinique chubby what eventually swung it for Glamour. The sun was streaming in through the windows of Smiths newsagents at the time I happened to be there, putting me in a very cheerful and summery mood.  Plus, and I think this is worth a mention if you’re cash strapped this month, Glamour's £2 cover price is half that of Elle.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm in Woppin’ Watermelon – review

Swatch: Clinique Woppin' Watermelon

Enriched with mango and shea butter, this is a lip treatment with a sheer colour. Application is smooth and I got the immediate moisture hit I was hoping for.  The light candy pink colour really is very sheer. I’m not one for big bold lip colours, so this suits me perfectly. But  I’m not sure those with darker lips would see much, if any, impact.
Clinique Woppin' Watermelon applied without liner (L) and with (R)

On a final note, I really like how the pencil-style applicator rolls up and down just like a lipstick. Much more convenient than having to carry a sharpener around with you all the time!

Other hot Freebies this month:

- InStyle: Neal’s Yard Remedies Geranium & Orange hand cream
- Harper’s Bazaar, L’Occitane fragrance
- Elle: Malin & Goetz skincare travel set
- Marie Claire, Balance Me face cream or cleansing balm
